How The Formula Parser Works
The CalculatorKits Molecular Weight Calculator utilizes a highly optimized recursive descent parser written in JavaScript to break down your chemical inputs. It works directly in your browser without needing to ping an external server.
It reads elements exactly as written. Because chemical symbols are case-sensitive, the parser distinguishes between Co (Cobalt) and CO (Carbon and Oxygen). Furthermore, the recursive logic natively supports nested brackets and parentheses. If you type Ca(NO3)2, the engine knows to multiply both the Nitrogen and Oxygen atoms inside the parentheses by 2 before calculating the total weight.
Understanding Molar Mass
Molar mass is a physical property defined as the mass of a given substance divided by the amount of substance (moles). The standard base SI unit for molar mass is kg/mol, but it is almost universally expressed in grams per mole (g/mol) in standard chemistry.
Atomic Weight
The numbers used in this calculator are based on the standard atomic weights published by IUPAC. These are weighted averages of the naturally occurring isotopes of each element on Earth.
Mass Percentage
Knowing the total mass is useful, but knowing the Mass Percentage (shown in our composition table) is critical for empirical formula calculations. It tells you exactly how much of a compound's weight is dedicated to a specific element.
Trust & Data Privacy
Your mathematical calculations and lab homework are completely private. All formula parsing and database lookups happen instantly via JavaScript inside your local browser memory. We never log, track, or save any formulas you type into this tool.
